What is Aikido?

Aikido
(the way of harmonizing energy) was originated by Morihei
Ueshiba.
Before
establishing this Budo (martial art) he studied many schools of traditional
budo like jujitsu, sword, staff and spear techniques.
The principle of Aikido is never to oppose power with power but to blend with
the oncoming force and redirect it. The smoothness of Aikido is often likened
to a dance.
Aikido is a form of moving meditation - a true Zen art - and the
philosophy can be applied to everyday living.
For these reasons, Aikido is considered
to be a true Budo rather than just a means of self defense.
Aikido is not a competitive art; therefore, Aikido allows the practitioner
to concentrate on collaboration and self iimprovement not only as Aikidoist,
but
also as a Human
Being through its application to everyday life. In the words of Morihei Ueshiba:
"The Way of the Warrior has been misunderstood as a means
to kill and destroy others. Those who seek competition are making a grave
mistake.
To smash, injure,
or destroy is the worst sin a human being can commit. The real Way of a
Warrior is to prevent slaughter - it is the Art of Peace, the power of
love."
